RALEIGH, N.C., March 4 (UPI) -- Manny Legace stopped 25 shots Thursday in helping Carolina extend its longest winning streak of the season to seven games in a 4-1 decision over Ottawa.
Despite the stretch of success that began well before the Olympic break, Carolina still has the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference.
The Hurricanes went into the game with the Islanders trailing Boston by eight points for the final playoff position in the conference.
Tom Kostopoulos and Rod Brind'Amour scored goals 1:05 apart in the first period to give Carolina a 2-0 lead. Brandon Sutter and Chad LaRose also scored for the Hurricanes.
Pascal Leclaire surrendered two goals on five shots before being replaced by Brian Elliot, who made 14 saves the rest of the way.
