Steelers' Reed draws community service

PITTSBURGH, March 2 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed must complete 40 hours of community service stemming from an October arrest, a judge says.

State District Judge Richard King threw out charges of simple assault and resisting arrest against King Monday and ordered the Steelers player to do the community service before considering dropping the remaining charges of disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

Pittsburgh police said at a court hearing Reed smelled of alcohol and threatened them by going into a fighting stance outside a bar as they were confronting his teammate, Matt Spaeth, for allegedly urinating in public.

The newspaper said Sgt. David Krueger testified Reed "went down into a fighting stance and brought his fists up to his face like a boxing stance" after coming out of a truck and refused to comply when police ordered him back in.

Four officers eventually restrained and handcuffed Reed, the Tribune Review said.

"He put his nose in where it didn't belong," King said. "For someone of his means, a fine means nothing. His time is much more valuable."
