Williams, Hercog to meet in Acapulco final

ACAPULCO, Mexico, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Venus Williams and Slovenian Polona Hercog will meet in the finals of the Mexican Open after each notched semifinal wins Friday.

Williams, the former world No. 1, downed Romania's Edina Gallovits 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, while No. 8 seed Hercog upset fifth-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 7-5 to advance to her first-ever WTA Tour final.

Williams, the defending Acapulco champion who is coming off a win in last week's Dubai tournament, broke Gallovits' serve to win the first set to rebound nicely from Thursday's traumatic near-upset to unheralded Spaniard Laura Pous Tio on the clay courts of The Fairmont Acapulco Princess.

The 19-year-old Hercog, meanwhile, has never faced Williams on the tour.
