Villegas takes Phoenix first-round lead

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Camilo Villegas carded his lowest-ever round on the PGA tour Thursday, a 9-under 62, to grab the first-round lead of the Phoenix Open.

Villegas' round came in the wake of his third-place finish last week at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, giving him momentum in to the Phoenix event.

The Colombian chipped in from the fringe for a birdie on his final hole of the day after missing the fairway with the first shot and then sailing over the green with his second. The closing birdie gave him sole possession of first place.

Matt Every fired eight birdies and finished with an 8-under 63 and stood alone in second place at the TPC Scottsdale.

Justin Rose, Mark Wilson, Ryuji Imada, Rickie Fowler and Pat Perez were bunched together in third place at 6-under 65.
