BRISTOL, Colo., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Aaron Boone, who played 12 years in the major leagues, said Tuesday he was retiring from the game and would join ESPN as a broadcaster.
Boone, 36, will become part of the team of analysts on ESPN's "Baseball Tonight."
He signed a one-year deal last year with Houston before a spring training examination revealed a problem that required open-heart surgery. He joined the team late in the season but appeared in only 10 games.
Boone broke into the major leagues in 1997 with Cincinnati and played more than six seasons with the Reds before being traded to the New York Yankees. He finished the 2003 season in New York and later played for Cleveland, Florida and Washington before signing with the Astros.
He was a career .263 hitter with 126 home runs and 555 runs batted in over 1,152 games.
Boone is the brother of Bret Boone, the son of Bob Boone and the grandson of Ray Boone, all of whom also played in the major leagues.
