Norway clinches curling semifinal berth

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Norway joined Canada in the semifinals of the men's Olympic curling tournament Monday by rolling to a 9-2 victory over France.

The Norwegians improved their record to 6-2 with one contest remaining in the nine-match, round-robin tournament that ends Tuesday. Canada will be the No. 1 seed going into the medal round, having boosted its record to 8-0 Monday with a 7-2 thrashing of the United States.

Four teams were left to battle for the final two semifinal positions. Switzerland and Britain have three losses each while Germany and Sweden have four.

If tie-break matches are required, they will be played Wednesday.

Germany kept its hopes alive with a 7-6 victory over China and Switzerland picked up a key 7-3 triumph over Sweden.

The United States men's team, which earned the country's first Olympic curling medal with a bronze in Turin, is out of medal contention with a 2-6 record.

Canada, the defending champion, has outscored its eight opponents by a combined 65-33.
