Canadian women bounce back in curling

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Canada bounced back from its first loss in the women's Olympic curling tournament to clinch a semifinal spot Monday with a 6-2 victory over Sweden.

The Canadian women lost to China Sunday after winning their first five games in the nine-match Olympic round-robin tournament.

In a battle for first place, Canada jumped to a 4-0 lead through four ends and held on to improve to 6-1.

Sweden, the defending Olympic champion, fell to 5-2 and needs one win in its last two matches to wrap up a semifinal berth.

China failed to back up its big win over Canada, falling to Russia 7-4. That dropped the Chinese to 5-3, but a victory over the United States in their final round-robin game Tuesday will see them through to the semis.

Switzerland moved within reach of a semifinal spot with its 10-4 victory over Japan. The Swiss are 4-3 with matches remaining against Germany and the Americans.
