CHICAGO, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- The Chicago White Sox have withdrawn their offer to free agent outfielder Johnny Damon, General Manager Ken Williams said Friday.
The team's move makes it more likely the former New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox star will gravitate to the Detroit Tigers, the Chicago Tribune reported.
"I went to (White Sox Chairman) Jerry Reinsdorf and asked for another special exemption," Williams told the newspaper. "We tried to be creative, and I can truthfully say that Johnny and (agent) Scott Boras showed a willingness in what we were trying to do. But the total dollars and cents didn't make sense to us."
The White Sox, with a projected payroll this season of $103 million, apparently reassessed their need for Damon, who would provide a left-handed bat at the top of the lineup.
The Tribune said reports indicate Damon's agent, Scott Boras, has received a $7 million offer from the Tigers.
"Johnny isn't about getting the last dollar and remained very interested in playing for the White Sox," Williams said. "I think there were other factors."
