WHISTLER, British Columbia, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- World champions Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin of Russia took the lead Friday following the compulsory portion of the Olympic ice dancing competition.
Domnina and Shabalin received a mark of 43.76 from the judges for a routine that, like others skated Friday, contained all the basic dance elements.
A much more complicated program will be performed in the free skate on Sunday, when the medals will be awarded.
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada finished second in the compulsories with a score of 42.74. They were third at last year's world championships and second the year before that.
American dancers took up the next two spots. Meryl Davis and Charlie White were third at 41.47. Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto, who won the silver medal in Turin, were fourth with a score of 40.83.
The medal won by Belbin and Agosto four years ago was the first for an American ice dance team since 1976, when Colleen O'Connor and James Millns won a bronze in the first year the sport was contested in the Olympics.
