
MEMPHIS, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain was knocked out of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis Tuesday by 41st-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
Chardy scored seven aces and did not give Verdasco a break-point opportunity in the match and went on to win 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Seventh-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany also made an early exit with a 7-5, 7-5 loss to Kazakhstan's Evgeny Korolev.
Fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic had little trouble dispatching American qualifier Ryan Sweeting 6-2, 6-1 in a match that lasted only 57 minutes. Berdych won 85 percent of his service points.
Also advancing was Croatia's Ivo Karlovic, who served up 32 aces while downing Germany's Benjamin Becker 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4).
