WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- The Washington Nationals agreed to terms Monday with outfielder Willy Taveras on a minor league contract.

Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo said the deal includes a spring training invitation.

Taveras, a career .276 hitter, has eight home runs, 124 RBI and 194 stolen bases in 643 big league games spanning five-plus seasons.

Taveras' career stolen-base percentage of 82.2 percent, which ranks third among active players with at least 150 stolen bases, is better than that of such speedsters Carl Crawford (81.9 percent), Ichiro Suzuki (81.2 percent) and Jose Reyes (80.1 percent).

He stole a career-high 68 bases for Colorado in 2008. In his rookie season in 2005, Taveras hit .291 and swiped 34 bases for Houston, collecting seven first-place votes in NL Rookie of the Year balloting. He finished second to Ryan Howard.
