MARSEILLE, France, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Seventh-seeded Marcos Baghdatis was an easy straight-set winner Monday in first-round play of the $700,000 Open 13 tennis tournament in France.
Baghdatis, from Cyprus, needed just 69 minutes to get past Daniel Brands 6-3, 6-2. Baghdatis faced just one break-point situation -- saving it -- and had three breaks of Brands's serve. Baghdatis lost just six points over four service games in the second set.
In other matches on a light schedule, German Mischa Zverev stopped David Guez 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 and Frenchman Florent Serra was on the court 55 minutes in a 6-3, 6-3 blitz of Igor Kunitsyn.
Serra cashed in all three of his break-point changes and won 86 percent of the point off his first serve.
The tournament continues through Sunday when the winner will collect $125,000.
