Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Top-seeded American Andy Roddick and second seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain won quarterfinal matches Friday in the SAP Open at San Jose, Calif.
Roddick defeated fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5). Verdasco dropped Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
In Friday's other quarterfinal matches, Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan upset sixth-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 and No. 7 Sam Querrey of the United States defeated fellow American Michael Russell 6-4, 6-3.
Querrey will meet Roddick in one semifinal match and Verdasco will take on Istomin in the other semifinal Saturday.
