COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain and hometown hero Thomaz Bellucci notched first-round wins Tuesday at the Brasil Open.

Defending champion Ferrero, who once held the world's top spot, downed Argentine Eduardo Schwank 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 on the clay courts at Costa do Sauipe-Salvador.

Meanwhile, Bellucci -- the No. 3 seed who was coming off a win in last week's Santiago tournament -- registered a 6-2, 7-5 win over fellow Brazilian Thiago Alves.

Bellucci finished second in last year's Brasil Open to Ferrero.

Elsewhere at the tourney, No. 4 seed Igor Andreev of Russia had little trouble with Italian Potito Starace 6-2, 6-2, while fifth-seeded Romanian Victor Hanescu notched a win over Brazilian Joao Souza 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

No. 6 seed Pablo Cuevas posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Italian Filippo Volandri.
