Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

TORONTO, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- J.S. Giguere made an auspicious debut with Toronto Tuesday, posting a shutout and leading the Maple Leafs to a 3-0 win over New Jersey.
Giguere, acquired in a trade with Anaheim Sunday for goaltender Vesa Toskala and forward Jason Blake, turned aside all 30 shots he saw, notching his 34th career whitewash.
Nikolai Kulemin, Phil Kessel and Francois Beauchemin each scored for the Maple Leafs, who snapped a six-game losing in their first game after a pair of major trades. The team also got All-Star defenseman Dion Phaneuf and forward Fredrik Sjostrom in a Sunday deal with Calgary.
New Jersey lost for the fourth time in five games. Yann Danis was in goal for only the eighth time this year, stopping 23-of-26 shots.
