NEW YORK, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- New York Jets head Coach Rex Ryan was fined $50,000 for making an obscene gesture, team officials said Tuesday.
Ryan was reportedly seen making the gesture during a mixed martial arts event in South Florida Saturday.
"Rex showed extremely poor judgment and his conduct was inappropriate," Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement. "He knows he was wrong, has apologized and we have accepted his apology."
Ryan flipped off rowdy Miami Dolphins fans at an event held Saturday night at an arena in Sunrise, Fla., the New York Daily News reported.
The incident reportedly happened at a fight card that featured ex-NFL star Herschel Walker. Witnesses said Ryan was accosted with insults and foul language by Miami fans as he left the area, giving them the middle finger on the way out, the Daily News said.
Ryan led the Jets to a 9-7 mark in his rookie season, taking them into the AFC Championship game after claiming the wild-card berth. New York beat Cincinnati and San Diego in road contests before succumbing to the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC title contest.
