NHL: Washingon 3, Tampa Bay 2

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Alexander Ovechkin sent Washington ahead with 6:26 remaining and the Capitals held on Sunday for their 10th straight win, a 3-2 decision over Tampa Bay.

Ovechkin was assisted by Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Poti on his 35th goal of the season.

The first period was scoreless and Backstrom and Brooks Laich scored in the second to give the Caps a 2-0 lead.

Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos scored for Tampa Bay within a span of less than 3 minutes in the third. Six minutes after Stamkos tied it, Ovechkin fired in his winner.

Jose Theodore made 25 saves for Washington and the Lightning's Mike Smith had 28.
