NHL: Phoenix 3, New York Rangers 2

PHOENIX, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- The Phoenix Coyotes scored three times in the first period Saturday and held on to edge the New York Rangers 3-2.

Shane Doan, Mikkel Boedker and Sami Lepisto scored in the opening period, and Jason LaBarbera kept the Rangers at bay by stopping 24-of-26 shots.

Marian Gaborik and Sean Avery scored for New York midway through the third period, but it was not enough to prevent the Rangers' losing skid from reaching five games. Chad Johnson notched 21 saves.

LaBarbera made 10 saves in the second period and four in the third.

The Coyotes, who won their third in a row, took a 2-0 lead on goals by Doan and Boedker just 41 seconds apart. Lepisto made it 3-0 with a goal at 14:13.

Gaborik scored New York's first goal midway through the third period. Avery cut the gap to one with a goal a little more than 2 minutes later.
