Leafs get 4 players, give up 6 in 2 trades

TORONTO, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Toronto made trades with two teams Sunday, giving up six players and acquiring four, including defenseman Dion Phaneuf and goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

The Leafs got Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom and defensive prospect Keith Aulie from Calgary and Giguere from Anaheim.

Toronto sent forwards Niklas Hagstrom, Jamal Mayers and Mat Stajan and defenseman Ian White to the Flames and goalie Vesa Toskala and forward Jason Blake to the Ducks.

The Maple Leafs' shakeup came with the team winless in its last six games and mired in last place in the Eastern Conference Northeast Division with a 17-28-11 record.

Phaneuf, a former all-star, was drafted by the Flames in 2003 and has accumulated 75 goals and 153 assists. He missed only five games in more than five years with the Calgary team.

Giguere, in the NHL since 1997, has also played for Calgary and Hartford. Giguere won the Conn Smythe Trophy with Anaheim as the Most Valuable Player in the 2003 Stanley Cup playoffs, in which New Jersey beat the Ducks in the championship series.

Hagman scored 20 goals this season for the Leafs, leading the team. He has 122 goals and 118 assists in eight NHL seasons.

Toskala and Blake, 36, both were in their third year in Toronto. Blake had a 40-goal season with the New York Islanders in the 2006-07 season.

Sjostrom has 42 goals and 52 assists in 404 NHL games for Phoenix, the New York

The 35-year-old Mayers played 10 seasons for St. Louis before moving to Toronto two years ago. Stajan played six seasons for the Leafs; White is in his fifth NHL season.
