Dawson to wear Expo uniform at induction

CHICAGO, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Former Major League Baseball star Andre Dawson says he will wear a Montreal Expos uniform when he is inducted into the Hall of Fame in June.

Dawson, who spent the first 11 seasons of his 21-year his career in Montreal, sent a text message to the Chicago Tribune late Tuesday and confirmed the decision Wednesday.

He was a free agent when he joined the Chicago Cubs in 1987 and was the National MVP after producing 49 home runs, 137 RBI and a .287 batting average that season.

Dawson played for the Cubs six years, batting .285 with 174 homers, 587 RBI, and five All-Star appearances.

"Cubs fans will always be incredibly important in my heart, and I owe them so much for making my time in Chicago memorable," he said in a statement released by the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

In his career, which also included stints with Boston and Florida, Dawson won eight Gold Gloves, four Silver Slugger Awards, seven All-Star nods, and added 314 stolen bases.

In 2003, catcher Gary Carter became the lone Expo to be inducted into the Hall.
