OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Oakland Athletics have signed free agent right hander Ben Sheets to a three-year, $10 million contract.
The four-time all-star was unable to pitch for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2009 due to a slower-than-expected recovery from right elbow surgery and might not be fully recovered in time for spring training.
Recently, he threw for several scouts in Louisiana.
"Ben's been one of the top pitchers in the game, and when you have that opportunity, regardless of where you are as a club, you're going to take the chance," General Manager Billy Beane told the Oakland Tribune Wednesday.
Beane added the Athletics' medical staff gave Sheets' elbow a thorough exam and was satisfied.
The National League starter at the 2008 All-Star Game at New York's Yankee Stadium has compiled an 86-83 lifetime record with a 3.72 ERA in 11 seasons.
