SAN DIEGO, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Longtime big-league infielder Mark Loretta retired as a player Monday and took a front-office job with the San Diego Padres.
The 38-year-old Loretta played for the Padres from 2003 through 2005 in a 15-year career that also included stints with the Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. He played for the Dodgers last season.
Loretta joins the Padres as special assistant for baseball operations.
"I feel extremely fortunate and thankful to have had this career," Loretta said. "The competition and camaraderie will be missed, but the experiences I enjoyed and the friendships I made will last a lifetime."
Loretta, a two-time all-star, had a career batting average of .295 with 76 home runs, 629 RBI and 768 runs scored in 1,726 games.
