LAS VEGAS, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- More than 300 horseplayers will compete in Las Vegas this week for the national "Handicapper of the Year" championship.
The defending champion is John Conte of Oceanside, N.Y. He won last year by building the top mythical bankroll from $2 win-and-place wagers on more than 130 races at seven tracks.
The 11th annual competition at the Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa this Friday and Saturday is sponsored by the Daily Racing Form and National Thoroughbred Racing Association.
The winner of the event, known as the National Handicapping Championship, will receive $500,000.
"We are delighted to return to Red Rock in Las Vegas for what has become the most anticipated tournament in the world among horseplayers," said Keith Chamblin, a senior vice president of the NTRA. "This year's field of 302 is our biggest ever, which means this year's NHC will be the most competitive in the event's history."
