MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- James Posey made a layup just before the buzzer Friday, giving the New Orleans Hornets a 96-94 victory over Minnesota.
The Timberwolves, seeking their 10th win of the season, tied it with 3.5 seconds to go on a layup by Jonny Flynn and an ensuing free throw.
Posey, however, handed Minnesota yet another disappointing setback by getting off his shot an instant before the game ended. The officials took a look at replays of the shot before ruling it had come in time.
New Orleans remained in a fourth-place tie with Memphis in the Southwest Division, both teams 4 1/2 games out of the lead.
Chris Paul led the Hornets with 23 points in a game that was close throughout. The contest was tied at halftime and New Orleans took a three-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Al Jefferson scored 25 for Minnesota and Flynn had 20.
