RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Tracy Smith scored 23 points on his 22nd birthday Wednesday and North Carolina State held No. 6 Duke to 38 percent shooting in downing the Blue Devils 88-74.
The Wolfpack opened as much as a 16-point lead in the second half before holding on for the surprising victory.

Smith made 10-of-12 from the field while Dennis Horner added 20 points and Javier Gonzalez 15. North Carolina State advanced to 13-6 for the season and to 2-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Duke (15-3, 3-2) was led by Kyle Singler with 22 and Jon Scheyer with 21. The Blue Devils made only 22 field goals.
Virginia, which does not have a place in the national Top 25, leads the ACC with a 3-0 mark.
