STORRS, Conn., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Connecticut men's basketball Coach Jim Calhoun will take an immediate medical leave of absence from the 21st-ranked team, the school announced Tuesday.

Associate head Coach George Blaney will take over the reins for the Huskies (11-6, 2-3 Big East).

"It is my recommendation that Coach Calhoun take a medical leave from his coaching position to address some temporary medical issues, none of which involve any previous medical conditions that he has dealt with," said school physician Peter Schulman.

Calhoun is a three-time cancer survivor. A UConn spokesman said Cahoun's leave is not related to cancer or a heart condition, and he does not need to be hospitalized, ESPN reported.
