Major league umpires OK 5-year deal

NEW YORK, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Major league umpires have given their stamp of approval to a five-year contract with Major League Baseball.

The World Umpires Association's contract, which runs through Dec. 31, 2014, will give Commissioner Bud Selig power to expand the instant replay system beyond the current review of home run calls.

Another notable change is that umpires will now be allowed to work consecutive World Series.

Management also will be allowed to use video to evaluate umpires.

The financial terms include a 2 percent pay hike across the board and new retirement guidelines.

Baseball owners unanimously ratified the pact last Thursday at their meetings in Arizona.
