DURHAM, N.C., Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Officials at Duke University said three members of the North Carolina school's football team are facing felony firearm charges.
Duke officials confirmed freshmen players John Drew, Kyle Griswould and Brandon Putnam were charged with felony possession and discharge of a weapon over an incident on campus last weekend, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer said Monday.
Police allege the three football players were connected to several gunshots fired near a Duke residence hall early Sunday morning.
The East Campus incident resulted in no reported injuries. The firearm thought to be used in the shooting was recovered.
The three students, whose ages were not released, were dismissed from the football team as a result of their arrest by campus police.
The Observer said until the criminal charges are resolved, all three football players will be banned from the Duke campus.
"Obviously, we take this very seriously," Duke spokesman Michael Schoenfeld offered.
