NHL: Tampa Bay 3, Carolina 2

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Steve Downie scored with 10:49 to play Monday and the Tampa Bay Lightning held on to clip the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2.

The teams took turns scoring and it was 2-2 when Downie took a pass from Martin St. Louis and knocked in the goal that turned out to be the game-winner.

Ryan Malone and Vincent Lecavalier got the other goals for the Lightning.

Matt Cullen and Chad LaRose scored for the Hurricanes, who have lost three in a row.

Tampa Bay goalie Antero Niittymaki made 20 saves and Carolina's Cam Ward had 29.
