HONOLULU, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Ryan Palmer, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, battled through blustery conditions Friday to take a one-shot lead midway through the Sony Open in Honolulu.
Palmer shot a 4-under 66 at the Waialae Country Club for a two-day total of 131 at the first full-field event on the circuit this year.
Defending champion Zach Johnson reached 132 by firing a 67 and was tied for second with Robert Allenby and Chad Campbell, who missed out on his first major title last year when he fell to Angel Cabrera in a sudden death playoff at the Masters.
Steve Stricker, ranked No. 3 in the world, was at 133 along with John Merrick and Jeff Quinney. Cabrera and Davis Love III were among those at 134.
It took a score of 141 to survive the 36-hole cut. Among those missing out were John Daly and current U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover.
