Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Arnaud Clement and John Isner each recorded upsets Friday, winning spots in the finals of the Heineken Open tournament in New Zealand.
Saturday's tournament title match will mark the first career meeting between the Frenchman Clement and the American Isner. It will be the 11th ATP title appearance for Clement, who hasn't gotten this far in a tournament since 2007. He owns four championships. Isner is in the second finals of his career, but also his first since 2007.
Isner knocked off three seeds this week, including Friday's 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win over No. 8-seeded Spaniard Albert Montanes the latest. Isner had two service breaks in taking the first set, with Montanes's lone double fault of the day coming on set point.
Isner piled up 10 aces in the second set before taking the tiebreaker.
Clement defeated fifth-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). There was just one break in the match -- by Clement in the first set -- but the French player didn't face a break point in snapping Kohlschreiber's 10-match winning streak in Auckland.
