SYDNEY, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Serena Williams survived an upset bid Thursday to reach the championship match of the Medibank International Sydney.

In the final tuneup for the Australian Open, Aravane Rezai was serving for the match at 5-3 in the second set. Williams, however, ran off four straight games and won the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

That put her in the finals against fifth-seeded and defending champion Elena Dementieva, who was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over No. 6 Victoria Azarenka.
