Chapman was reported to have agreed to a five-year contract worth at least $25 million.

The young left-hander, who pitched for the Cuban national team, defected in the summer of 2009 while the team was playing in an international event in the Netherlands.

Members of Chapman's family, including his parents and two sisters, remain in Cuba.

Major league scouts reported that Chapman's fastball has been clocked up to 102 mph.
