
ATLANTA, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Mike Knuble and Alexander Semin each scored two goals and added an assist in Washington's 8-1 pounding of the Atlanta Thrashers Saturday.
Michal Neuvirth had a solid 38 saves and the Capitals had at least one point from 16 different players en route to their ninth win in their last 10 games against Southeast Division rivals.
Nicklas Backstrom, David Steckel, Tom Poti and Jason Chimera also scored for the Caps.
Washington built a 4-0 lead by the time Maxim Afinogenov scored the lone Thrashers goal at 14:13 of the second period. Johan Hedberg was hit for four goals on nine shots before being relived by Ondrej Pavelec, who stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced.
The Capitals outscored Atlanta 4-0 in the third period to turn the contest into a rout.
