ADELBODEN, Switzerland, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Fog scrubbed Saturday's men's World Cup giant slalom in Adelboden, Switzerland.

The event was to have been the final giant slalom of the Olympic selection period but the stubborn mist forced officials to suspend competition after 58 of 66 skiers started and then call it off altogether after a two-hour delay.

Davide Simoncelli of Italy was in the lead when the race was canceled. American Ted Ligety was in fifth place while Bode Miller was eliminated when he struck a gate with his shoulder and spun out.

There was no immediate word on a makeup race. The slalom competition is scheduled for Sunday.
