NHL: Detroit 2, Los Angeles 1

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Jimmy Howard went 51-of-52 in goal Thursday Darren Helm's goal with 17.3 seconds remaining gave the Detroit Red Wings a 2-1 win over Los Angeles.

Dan Cleary also scored for Detroit, which won for the second time in the first three games of a five-game road trip.

Ryan Smyth scored a goal and Jonathan Quick was 22-of-24 in goal for the Kings, who had won three straight coming into the game.
