NBA: San Antonio 97, Washington 86

WASHINGTON, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Tim Duncan scored an efficient 23 points while leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 97-86 win over the Washington Wizards Saturday.

Duncan shot 10-of-16 from the field and nabbed seven rebounds in the Spurs' fifth consecutive victory.

Roger Mason came off the bench to contribute 20 to the San Antonio cause and Tony Parker added 12.

Caron Butler led Washington with 24 points and six rebounds. Gilbert Arenas had 23 points and seven assists.

San Antonio put on an 18-6 run late in the fourth quarter to overcome an 80-79 deficit with 6 1/2 minutes to play. Duncan scored seven points down the stretch.

The second half began tied 50-50 and remained close the entire second half. The Wizards led 71-70 at the start of the fourth quarter.
