Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Brandon Dubinsky scored the go-ahead goal with 8:11 to play in the third period Thursday, giving the New York Rangers a 2-1 victory over Carolina.
The Rangers bounced back from a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Philadelphia Wednesday to halt a two-game skid.
Joni Pitkanen gave Carolina the lead midway through the first period and the Hurricanes could not score again against Henrik Lundqvist, who had to make just 17 saves in the victory.
Erik Christensen tied it with 3:24 left in the first period on his first goal of the season. Christensen was playing in his 18th game of his fifth NHL season. He has played for four different teams in those five years.
Cam Ward stopped 33-of-35 shots for Carolina.
