DETROIT, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Ville Leino put Detroit in front with 3:52 remaining Thursday and Darren Helm scored two shorthanded goals, giving the Red Wings a 4-2 win over Colorado.

Brandon Yip tied it for Colorado with 8:01 left in the third period but Leino tipped in a shot by Derek Meech for the game-winner. Helm added his second shorthanded tally with 23 seconds to go.

Detroit won for just the second time in six games, getting 20 saves from Jimmy Howard.

Yip scored twice and both Matt Duchene and Darcy Tucker had two assists for the Avalanche. Craig Anderson stopped 31 shots.

The four goals were the most Detroit had scored in 14 games.
