CHICAGO, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- The Chicago Cubs filled a void Thursday by signing free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd to a three-year, $15 million contract.
Byrd, 32, was signed following the recent trade of the volatile Milton Bradley to the Seattle Mariners.
Last season, Byrd batted .283 for the Texas Rangers with personal highs of 20 home runs and 89 RBI.
He was signed instead of fellow free agent outfielders Rick Ankiel (St. Louis) and Scott Podsednik (White Sox).
"We felt like we explored every avenue, free-agency and trade-wise, and it kept coming back to Marlon was the right guy," General Manager Jim Hendry told the Chicago Tribune.
The Cubs said on their Web site they want to move Kosuke Fukudome from center field to right next season.
They also have shown interest in Colorado's Ryan Spilborghs to add outfield depth.
