ATLANTA, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Freshman Ryan Williams ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns Thursday, carrying No. 12 Virginia Tech past Tennessee 37-14 in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
Matt Waldron made a 21-yard field goal on the final play of the first half after game officials had put 2 seconds back on the clock, giving Virginia Tech a 17-14 lead at the break.
The Hokies then dominated the final two quarters behind the running of Williams.
Williams set single-season school records for rushing yards (1,655) and touchdowns (21). He also equaled the Atlantic Coast Conference single-season record for touchdowns and 100-yard games (10).
Virginia Tech (10-3) piled up 230 yards and four scores on the ground. David Wilson and Tyron Taylor both produced rushing touchdowns.
Tennessee (7-6) rallied from a 14-point deficit to tie the game on a 2-yard pass from Jonathan Crompton to Denarius Moore with 18 seconds left in the first half.
After the kickoff, however, Taylor threw a 63-yard pass to Jarrett Boykin that carried to the Tennessee 3-yard line. Time ran off the clock during the play, but the officials said the clock should have stopped with 2 seconds showing.
That allowed Waldron to come on and kick the field goal that gave Virginia Tech the lead and momentum into halftime.
Virginia Tech, which defeated Cincinnati in last year's Orange Bowl, has won back-to-back post-season contests for the first time in school history.
