NHL: Carolina 6, Washington 3

WASHINGTON, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Eric Staal scored twice, added three assists and led a first-period charge that sent the Carolina Hurricanes on their way to a 6-3 win Monday over Washington.

Carolina built a 3-0 lead in the first, with Staal getting one of the goals and assisting on the other two. He added a goal and assist in the third period.

Tuomo Ruutu, Jussi Jokinen, Brandon Sutter and Sergei Samsonov scored and Cam Ward turned in 28 saves for the Hurricanes.

Alex Ovechkin, Mike Green and Eric Fehr posted the Capitals' goals.

Washington goaltender Jose Theodore stopped 20 shots.
