Doctor: Skier Vonn possible for GS slalom

LIENZ, Austria, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn may be able to take part in slalom events at the GS World Cup races in Lienz, Austria, despite a major fall Monday, a doctor says.

Dr. Eduard Sporer said Vonn did not break her arm during Monday's giant slalom race as initially suspected, saying instead the 25-year-old skier is suffering from "swelling or edema," The Ski Channel reported.

"It's not a classic broken wrist, but a swelling or edema in the bone," Sporer said.

German racer Kathrin Hoelzl maintained her lead going into Tuesday's races by winning the GS World Cup run Monday, besting fellow German skier Maria Riesch.

Riesch, who missed a gate during her run attempt, admitted it was difficult concentrating after watching her friend Vonn crash, The Ski Channel reported.

"It's hard to stay focused and keep your concentration during such a break," Riesch said. "But it wasn't the main reason for my mistake, it's more down to my lack of self-confidence in GS at the moment."
