NHL: Philadelphia 2, N.Y. Islanders 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Philadelphia goaltender Michael Leighton turned aside 28 shots Sunday and the Flyers edged the New York Islanders 2-1.

The Flyers' Danny Briere scored less than 2 minutes after the game began, directing the puck inside the right post.

Jon Sim tied it for New York in the second period.

Later in the second, Philadelphia's Jeff Carter scored the goal that turned out to be the game-winner, assisted by Scott Hartnell on a 2-on-1 break.

New York goalie Martin Biron, like Leighton, ended up with 28 saves.
