Sportscaster George Michael dies

WASHINGTON, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Washington-area NBC sportscaster George Michael, who had a nationally syndicated sports highlights show, died early Thursday, colleagues said. He was 70.

The Washington Post reported he had cancer.

Michael was a longtime sports director for WRC-TV, Washington, known for his outgoing personality, sense of humor and energetic presentations. His syndicated show, "The George Michael Sports Machine," ran for more than two decades.

Michael died at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington. A cause of death was not provided.

"George Michael was our friend and colleague for more than 25 years," WRC-TV said in a statement. "He was a dynamic force around our newsroom and in the entire Washington area. George was a pioneer in sports broadcasting. He was a gifted interviewer, a master storyteller and one of the hardest working journalists out there."

Survivors include his wife Pat and a daughter.
