CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Beleaguered Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme has landed on the season-ending injured reserve list due to a broken finger on his right hand.

The former Louisiana-Lafayette product, the Panthers' starting quarterback since he joined them in the 2003-04 season, endured constant criticism in 2009 because of a career-worst 18 interceptions and a career-low 59.4 passer rating.

He threw four interceptions in a season-opening 38-10 loss to Philadelphia and four more in a 17-6 loss to the New York Jets on Nov. 29, his final game this season.

Delhomme signed a five-year contract extension in April despite throwing five interceptions in a 33-13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Jan. 10, 2009 in the NFC Divisional playoffs.

"I couldn't do it," Delhomme said on the Panthers' Web site after trying to take a snap on Christmas Eve. "We were optimistic, but … time wasn't on our side."
