LOS ANGELES, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Lakers announced Wednesday they had signed forward Pau Gasol to a contract extension.

The Lakers did not disclose terms of the deal, but the Los Angeles Times reported it was a three-year extension that will keep Gasol under contract through the 2013-2014 season and could bring him as much as $64.7 million.

Gasol was acquired by the Lakers from Memphis in February 2008. He averaged 18.9 points and 9.6 rebounds a game last season during the team's march to the NBA championship.

"Over the past year and a half, Pau has quickly developed into one of the best all-around players in the NBA," said Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak. "The impact he has had on and off the court for the Lakers is significant and we look forward to watching Pau continue as one of the best players in the league for years to come."

Gasol is in his ninth NBA campaign, having been selected third overall in the 2001 draft.
