Ramsay wins South Africa golf playoff

PAARL, South Africa, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Richie Ramsay birdied the first playoff hole Sunday and beat Shiv Kapur, capturing the South African Open Championship at Paarl, South Africa.

In the final 18 holes of regulation, the 2006 U.S. Amateur champion shot 7-under-par 65, while Kapur shot 5-under 67, with both ending 72 holes with totals of 13-under 275.

The par-5 18th was the playoff hole, where Ramsay, a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, two-putted for birdie and his first European PGA Tour title.

"There's no greater feeling than winning," Ramsay said. "I'm just a flood of emotions. … I'm holding back the tears. (Now) I go out believing and thinking I can win."

Kapur, from New Delhi, qualified for the playoff with five straight pars at the end of regulation.

Spaniard Pablo Martin (73), the leader after the second and third rounds, finished 10-under 278 and shared sixth with England's Darren Fichardt.

Chargers clinch AFC West Division

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Nate Kaeding's 52-yard field goal with 3 seconds left Sunday lifted the San Diego Chargers to a 27-24 win over Cincinnati.

The win enabled the Chargers (11-3) to overcome blowing an 11-point fourth-quarter lead and clinch the AFC West. Philip Rivers was 24-of-38 passing for 308 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Vincent Jackson picked up 108 yards and two scores on five receptions for San Diego, which took its ninth straight game.

The Chargers began the winning drive at their own 20. The drive was keyed by Rivers' 20-yard pass to Jackson to the Cincinnati 49, followed by a catch by Malcolm Floyd, who was able to get out of bounds at the 34 and stop the clock two plays later to set up the game-winning kick.

The Bengals (9-5) were mourning the death of wide receiver Chris Henry Thursday from injuries sustained after falling out of the back of a pickup truck.

Carson Palmer threw for a season-high 314 yards and two touchdowns on 27-of-40 passing for Cincinnati.

Records set in Cleveland-Kansas City game

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Jerome Harrison's late 28-yard touchdown run Sunday gave the Cleveland Browns a wild 41-34 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kansas City's Jamaal Charles scored once on 25 carries for 154 yards.

McKernan, Broncos' 'Barrel Man,' dies

DENVER, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Denver resident Tim McKernan, known as "Barrel Man" to Denver Broncos fans, died at age 69 at his home, his family said.

The Denver Post said Sunday family and friends of McKernan's gathered Saturday at the Greek theater in Civic Center to remember the Broncos fan who donned an orange barrel for the NFL team's home games.

"He would have been very excited seeing fans from many teams showing up and those who just love football," McKernan's son, Todd, said of those gathered to remember his father. "I'm sure he's looking down on us and smiling."

In addition to fans of the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs and the Indianapolis Colts, a number of McKernan's fellow Broncos fans were on hand to speak of his dedication to the NFL team.

"Tim was classy. He exemplified the ultimate Bronco fan," said Judy Renner, also known as "Bronco Mama" to Broncos fans.

Among the reported survivors of McKernan, who died Dec. 5 of lung disease, are his wife, Becky; his son, Todd; his daughter, Melissa Maurer; and his brother, Dean.
