NHL: Ottawa 4, Minnesota 1

OTTAWA, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Rookie Mike Brodeur made 22 saves in his NHL debut Saturday to lead the Ottawa Senators past Minnesota 4-1.

Brodeur had a shutout through two periods and enjoyed offensive backing that included a goal by Anton Volchenkov with 1:55 to play in the first.

Martin Havlat scored the lone Minnesota goal at 4:40 of the third period. Niklas Backstrom allowed four goals on 24 shots.

After Volchenkov opened the scoring, the Senators extended their lead to 4-0 on goals by Milan Michalek, Jarkko Ruutu and Erik Karlsson.
