NHL: San Jose 4, Anaheim 1

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Joe Thornton scored twice Thursday and the San Jose Sharks pulled away in the third period to down Anaheim 4-1.

The Sharks halted their longest losing streak of the season at five games and moved into a tie with Los Angeles atop the Western Conference with 47 points.

Thornton and Patrick Marleau scored in the second period to give the Sharks a 2-0 lead. It was the 21st goal of the season for Marleau.

Ryan Getzlaf brought Anaheim within one on a power-play goal just 34 seconds into the second period but Evgeni Nabokov was perfect in goal the rest of the way.

Thornton scored on the power play with 6:37 to play in the third and Devin Setoguchi added a goal with 3:49 remaining.

Nabokov had to make just 20 saves for the win. Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 34-of-38 shots.

San Jose had scored just 10 goals during its five-game skid.
